

One of Pauline's greatest loves is teaching. For the past 20 years she has organized and developed a broad range of workshops so that she may share her skills and expertise with others. Teaching metalsmithing techniques to others is an ever rewarding endeavor.

These are short descriptions of topics Pauline offers to teach. She teaches many of these on a regular basis in her own studio and at a variety of other educational venues.

Beads, Dozens of examples, shown & discussed: A myriad of construction approaches described in detail, enabling students to design their own unique metal beads. Demonstrations given. (handouts) 1-3 day
Chain Making: How to shape, combine and solder chain links. Non-soldered woven chain will be demonstrated with hands on time provided. Roman chain also demonstrated. How to solder links production style. (handouts) 1 day
Charcoal Casting:* A fun instant gratification method of direct metal casting. Students are taught how to carve a jewelers charcoal block, then make a silver casting of the carving. (handouts) 1 day may be combined with Delft clay casting
Chasing, Stamping, Matting: These surface decorating techniques will be demonstrated, with attention paid to discussing the unique attributes of each type of tool used. Samples of each technique and a variety of applications will be discussed. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with techniques. 1-2 day
Delft Clay Casting: This is a quick direct metal casting method. A special clay is used to create each individual mold. Students will have the opportunity to make several castings each, after the demonstration and safety tips are completed. 1 day
Enameling for Beginners: Learn the technique of fusing glass powder onto metal permanently. The basics of how to prepare, design and fire pieces for enameling. Set up, tolls, supplies and Safety will all be covered. Four basic styles will be taught. 1 day
Etching (nitric acid or ferric chloride): Nitric acid may be used for non-precious and silver etching. Ferric chloride is only for non-precious metal etching. A resist is painted onto the metal, then metal is immersed in acid to achieve end result of raised designs. Some at home preparation suggested.
File Carving (metal): This workshop shows students how to create shape, design, detail and dimension by carving directly into metal with needle files. (partial)
Flower forms (fabricated/formed): Using patterns designed by the instructor, students may create detailed, dimensional flowers using sheet metal and wire. (handouts) 2 days
Fold forming basics: This workshop teaches students how to develop dimensional forms out of sheet metal without soldering. (handouts)
Forged Flatware: Create one or more pieces of functional flatware (spoon, fork, knife) using traditional silversmithing forging techniques. (handouts) 2-3 days
Hinges, Rivets and Catches: How to layout, set up and solder hinges. Rivets as cold connections and catches for containers will be covered. Technical aspects of designing, laying out and completing container forms will be included. (handouts) 1-2 day
Hydraulic Press (beginning/intermediate): The hydraulic press has been developed as a multi functional tool for metalsmiths and jewelers. This course covers the basics of matrix dies, embossing, making tube, hollow bracelets and using the bending break. (handouts) 1-2 day
Kumbo (Keumbu): This is the traditional Korean technique of fusing very thin 24k gold to silver. It is an economical and visually dramatic way to combine gold and silver. (handouts) (partial)
Making Chasing, Stamping, matting tools: How to turn tool steel into an individualized, usable tempered tool for surface design. (handouts)
Mixed Metals (not mocume'): Students will be taught how to create patterns & designs by soldering different metals together using specific methods. Silver, copper, brass and nickel will be used. 1-2 day
Flex-Shaft accessories: There are hundreds of accessories for use in a flex shaft. This class teaches the proper and safe way to use a variety of those accessories. (handouts) (partial)
Raising, Planishing to form: This workshop covers the traditional technique of raising bowls from sheet metal, using hammers and stakes. Planishing is a method of hammering, by which you may form shallow domes or bowls. 2-3 day
Roll Printing: How to use a rolling mill to create dozens of surface textures and designs on sheet metal. (handouts) (partial)
Small Hollow forms (boxes, vases): Patterns for symmetrical boxes and abstract forms will be discussed. How to make patterns will be taught. How to solder and complete forms will also be covered. (small=up to a 4" x 4" format) (handouts) usually 2 day

Working with Gold: This workshop teaches students how to combine high Karat gold with silver for dramatic effect—economically. Soldering, using bi-metal, rivets and more, will be covered. 1 day
